I used to have ketchup on scrambled eggs, and I have it on a fried egg sandwiches. That is something that I eat only once or twice a year. I said before that I like it on toasted western sandwiches, but, come to think of it, I have not have one of those in years. I think the last time I had one I was still working, and I have been retired almost 18 years now. Perhaps I should go out for lunch one of these days and have one. |

Years ago a local radio station had a gal from Barrow on as their guest all the time, she ran a Mexican resto in Barrow. Lots of "adventures" about getting supplies in, and of course the food was three - four times what it would cost in the lower 48... AH, it burned some years ago: https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/article/pepes-landmark-barrow-restaurant-burns-ground/2013/08/31/ Early morning blaze destroys Pepe's restaurant, Barrow landmark By Jerzy Shedlock Published: August 31, 2013 35 years of history down to ash Tate opened Pepe's in 1978 in a tiny, two-bedroom home she remodeled with the help of others. Then, in 1980, at the request of Top of the World, she moved the operation to the hotel. The previous managers were having a tough time turning a profit, so Pepe's moved in, Tate said. "There's three dining rooms ... I don't even cook, and I was just in shock that I could own a restaurant that big," Tate said. Tate still considers herself a big part of the community of Barrow, helping out with locals in a bind and offering donations and time to youth sports. The restaurant was part of the community, too. Tate and her Pepe's cohorts donated hams to bereaved Barrow families, saving them the effort of preparing meals in a time of mourning their loved ones..." OH, she passed on: http://www.thearcticsounder.com/article/1933fran_tate_founder_of_pepes_dies Fran Tate, founder of Pepe's, dies August 13th, 2019 | Shady Grove Oliver "I am a crazy lady with a lot of guts." That was the way Fran Tate walked through life, as she told biographer Lyn Kidder in the 1996 book "Tacos on the Tundra: The Story of Pepe's North of the Border." And it's the way people remembered her after her passing in July. "I believe that if you seek excellence, it takes guts; I have more guts than brains, so I do crazy things," she told Kidder. "Barrow is wonderful. I just love it. I can exercise all the crazy ideas I have right here." And sometimes crazy, yet fruitful ideas Tate had aplenty. She spent decades on the North Slope, first working as an engineering draftsman, then running her own water delivery company and ultimately opening the wildly popular Pepe's North of the Border, a Mexican restaurant that developed a cult following in Utqiagvik and around the world. "Alaska has lost a legendary icon with the passing of Fran Tate," wrote Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski in a Facebook post on July 31. "Fran lived most of her life in Barrow ... working on the Alaska pipeline, running her landmark restaurant Pepe's North of the Border Mexican Restaurant for over 15 years and hosting the Jazz Below Zero (show) for KBRW radio. I have a deep appreciation for all that Fran did on behalf of her entire community." Along with her remembrance, Murkowski shared a clip from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from March 3, 1984. Tate was the guest that night and she brought to the stage her characteristic good humor, blonde hair and radiant smile. To start the show, she hands Carson a gift from the whole staff of Pepe's. Little does he know it's a walrus oosik. He takes a few guesses as Tate laughs. "Let's just say every male walrus has one," she says. Carson raises his eyebrows and Tate claps her hands together and throws back her head in laughter. The clip showed Tate's "innate ability to make everyone around her smile," Murkowski wrote. Carson asks her typical questions about the Arctic. How cold is it? How do you get deliveries of ingredients for the restaurant? How do you deal with endless day and endless night? "I went and I stayed for three weeks the first time. And then about a month later, they assigned me up there," she says. "I've been there a long time, and you just get used to it. If you can't handle it and if you can't cope with the difference between night and day, then Barrow isn't the place for you." Tate rattles off facts and figures about the North Slope, its square mileage and population off the top of her head. She speaks precisely and never misses a beat. She details her various jobs and unorthodox career path, and talks about her marriage to a man five years younger than her son. Her stories show that her life has not always been easy, yet when she recounts even the difficult moments, it's with levity and a smile. At one point, Carson pauses. "You sound like you really enjoy this," he says. "I do," Tate says. "It's challenging." </> -- GM |
