I figured it was something like that. Why should they pay for something
they don't use?

I itemize the other utilities, gas, electric, garbage, water, sewer, etc. Big Bucks rentals roll everything into Rent, which is bullshit! Makes Rents Astronomical!! My house room rents are NOT astronomical! And we all share itemized Utils! Kind of Mini-Socialism!

What difference does it make whether it's rolled into the rent or itemized?
They still have to pay it.

I can't remember renting an apartment where utilities were rolled into the
rent. I always received a bill from the electric company, the gas company,
and Ma Bell.

Our internet (10+ Mb/sec DSL 12 miles from town) and phone is under a
hundred a month , we stream all our TV content over the internet for
under 25 bucks a month . I think the cell phone is like 70 bucks a year
. As of right now there are a total of 6 computers networked and powered
- 3 laptops and 3 desktops . Each has it's own task , for example the
laptop in the shop has shortcuts to all my machining information on the
desktop , the one hooked to the TV has my media files , etc . But not a
single "smart" appliance or device in the house . They ALL spy on you in
one way or another . I've gone as far as covering the lens of the camera
on my "new" laptop (Lenovo T510 refurbed corporate lease return) with a
small piece of electrical tape .

My husband has covered the lenses of our computer for years now.

I am not too sure what is meant by a 'smart appliance'.

"Smart appliances" are the ones that are WiFi connected - can you
link to your refrigerator via your cell phone while at the market to see
if you need milk ?

  I wasn't a kid , I was married and in my late 20's . The theory was
to record all my vinyl albums to tape upon purchase , them put them up
and listen to the tape . Tape cost turned out to be too much ...

Sure they did. Right up until, oh, the 1960s or 1970s.

Private charity was imperfect, but people were fairly generous.
Neighborliness went a long way--if your neighbor was suffering
you might send over a casserole or help him find a job.

When medical technology was relatively primitive, it was not
so difficult to afford treatment. Now, when treatment can cost
hundreds of thousands of dollars, not so much.

Oh, the good old days.

Most treatment isn't that expensive.

No, I don't. I have a natural-gas powered automatic standby generator.
It's big enough to run the air-conditioning in the summer and has no
trouble with the small amount of electricity used by the furnace blower.

This is the new one. She didn't drop me. She didn't bother to see what
supplements I was already taking. She also told me to stop exercising
because it won't make me lose weight. I don't have any side effects from
iron.

I had a wonderful one too. He retired. Got another one who was pretty
useless. No follow-up on my labs until my follow-up appointment. Then he
noticed that they failed to test for 5 different things. I could not see him
again due to my new insurance and I was glad because I did not like him. I
like this new one even less. She's very young and is far more focused on how
I feel emotionally than anything else. Grrr... I can handle my emotions. I
need the Dr. to find out what's wrong with me medically. Not to wrongly
diagnose me with things out of her scope and then try to soothe me!
