there is no set time, it's done when it's done and it'd done when it's
fork tender.

is no different BBQing brisket, it is brisket. is done by feel. i've
seen all kinds of instructions with varying temperatures to cook it to.
experience has taught me to start checking for tenderness at 190F. i've
had brisket fork tender at 195F, and had it tender at 210F. when it's
done, the fork goes in like a hot fork in butter. over cook it and you
ruin it. low and slow is the only way to go. same thing making corned
beef pastrami. no two pieces of meat are the same.

we do corned beef once a year in the kitchen for Saint Patrick's Day.
corned beef and cabbage. early next week while corned beef is readily
available everywhere i'll grab a half dozen of them. one flat for the
corned beef and cabbage and five rounds to freeze to be used to make
pastrami throughout the rest of the year.

we just simmer the corned beef in water with the spices until its done,
add the cabbage and continue simmering until its done and enjoy. why
people want to make rocket science out of cooking a slab of cured
brisket is totally beyond me. if you can cook water you can cook corned
beef. sheeze.

I cook corned beef brisket in the crock pot with water and the packet of
"pickling spices" and throw in a couple of bay leaves. I later add the
cabbage wedges and continue cooking until thee cabbage is forking
tender. ;) No brown sugar and no placing it in the oven. Turns out
perfectly, the brisket is nice and tender. :)

I'm still using my first Dyson, a DC01, bought at the beginning of 1998.
It still does an excellent job.

Mine does a great job when it's working. The problem is that it never
keeps working long enough to vacuum the whole house. The filter usually
clogs even before the battery runs out. Then it has to be be rinsed out
and then sit for a day to dry. That is a ridiculous filtering system.

To say that I can't do the whole house is an understatement. I can't do
one floor. Half the time I can't even do one room.
Dave Smith <adavid.smith@sympatico.ca>: Mar 04 10:06AM -0500

> I would not use anything other than a Dyson! When I originally said

What was useless about it was that the filter needed cleaning just about
every time I used it, along with other clogging issues. The filter on
the original machine took 3-4 days to dry. I would rinse it out as
directed, shake it out, blow it out and set it out to dry but but even
after two days it still detected moisture and would not run. Dyson
replaced it. The replacement is a little better. The filter doesn't clog
up quite as quickly and it drys a little faster.

There are other clogging issues. Bits of leaves and dog hair clog in
the power head and tube. They also get into that intake port by the
motor. Then you have to open and empty the canister, unlatch it and
slide it out and poke around in that port to remove whatever is
obstructing it.

It is not as much a problem for me as it is for my wife, who is not at
all mechanically minded and whose arthritic fingers make to difficult
remove the parts to effect the repair.

I will say that when it works it does a great job. I can go over an area
of our carpeting with our central vac and beater bar and then go over it
with the Dyson and pick up a lot of stuff the central vac left behind.
I just can't count on it working.

I have got into the habit of emptying the canister after each use and
rinsing the filter ahead of time and recharging it to be ready for small
cleanup jobs. However, when I have to do the whole house I don't even
bother with it. I go right to the central vac. It may not do quite as
thorough a job as the Dyson, but it will last until the job is done.

Dog hair is too coarse to be clogging the filter. It is fine particulate
matter that does that. The stuff getting into that suction port could be
alleviated with a mesh screen. Bear in mind that this is their model
that is specifically designed for pet hair.

What they need is a type of filter that can pick out those fine
particles without clogging too quickly. There are filtering systems for
engines working in especially dusty conditions to get rid of the fine
particles before they get to the filter element.

It's in the oven as I type. It will go well with whatever else I choose
to cook for dinner tonight; beef, chicken or fish.

Barley Pilaf

1/3 c. pearl barley
1 Tbs. butter
2 Tbs. minced onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp. celery salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 c. chicken stock

Melt the butter and saute the onions and garlic until soft and
translucent. (I did this in the microwave in a 2 quart baking dish.)
Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and cook in a 325F oven for 1
hour. Serves 2; recipe may be doubled.

You are wrong as usual Gary. She had wanted a party. She had wanted to
invite everyone who was at the wedding and current friends and family.
Our son had pointed out that it meant a lot of people people coming down
here from Toronto for a party that would last just a few hours and most
of them are now past the age of doing that. The alternative was for us
to have the party there, which would make it difficult for our local
friends and my family.

FWIW she had previously rejected the offer of a trip. My good friend and
his wife will be celebrating their 50th about two months later and they
were planning to celebrate it in Paris. She nixed that in favour of a
party.

Too tight? They've been to Europe a number of times so I sincerely

Yeah. With good reason. She would quote 100 plus lines from 3-4 previous
posts in the threat only to add a half line comment, usually something
reinforcing the impression that she is clueless.

i planted a few rows of carrots last year and a woodchuck defeated my
defenses and mowed them all down to within a half inch of the ground
when they were 6-8 inches high. i thought they were goners. after i
fortified my defenses they came back and we had and nice harvest and
canned 18 pints of diced carrots. resilient they are. quite tasty too.

I have one living under my house. This is the year that
I get rid of it. I should start calling it *John Kuthe*,
since I want it gone. Unlike the other John Kuthe, it is
legal to take any measures necessary, without fear of
criminal prosecution. Then maybe one day I can post
here with the subject header, "John Kuthe is Dead."

Russia facts of the day

by Tyler Cowen March 3, 2023

"Consider that last year, the IMF predicted Russian GDP would shrink by 8.5% in 2022 and by
2.3% in 2023; for its part, the White House projected a year-on-year decline in Russian GDP of 15%.

Last month, the IMF revised its growth estimate for Russia to 0.3% for 2023 and 2.1% in 2024—higher
than the eurozone and the United Kingdom.

What happened? For the first eight months of the war, thanks to a 250% increase in hydrocarbon
prices combined with an unavoidable lag in sealing off imports, Western sanctions actually raised
Russian revenues from exports to the European Union. Sanctions only started to inflict significant
damage on the Kremlin at the very end of 2022, after which the Russian Finance Ministry reported
a budget deficit of nearly $25 billion for January, and an overall decline in revenue of 35%.

In the meantime, however, Russia managed to tap gray and black trade markets across the Middle
East, Africa, and Asia while continuing to sell oil around the world and provide petroleum services
like maritime shipping and insurance.

The EU has admitted to not knowing the quantity or nature of the Russian central bank assets it's
supposedly blocked.

At the same time, thanks to China, Russia now imports more semiconductors than it did before the war..."

Bryan would like to see John, but only if he were dead,
and like on the road, freshly hit by a vehicle while
crossing the street. I don't want to see him dead badly
enough to go into a funeral home because those are
creepy and icky, and they cover up the evidences of
bodily trauma with makeup and such.

Gary, I'd suggest that what you miss is getting laid, but
by now I kind of figure that you were never much of a
heterosexual to begin with. You not only weren't an
alpha male, but not even a beta or gamma. More like
a delta. No wonder that you were, and continue to be,
a failure with women.
