Digest for rec.food.cooking@googlegroups.com - 25 updates in 12 topics

Gary <g.majors@att.net>: Apr 23 09:10AM -0400

6 days since I went last week. This time at about 8:30am.

Very few people (about normal for that time of day).
Again they had plenty of everything except still a bit
slack in the paper aisle.

STill no paper towels (but I have plenty). They do have
Kleenex tissues now (but I never buy those).
Surprisingly, even a few (maybe a dozen) large packages
of toilet paper. 3 different brands that I've never
noticed before but they were overpriced. About $10
a pack for 12 double rolls.

I always buy a different brand, same size for about $6.
As I still have a good one month supply left, I skipped
it. Hopefully my brand will come back by then.

Anyway, when I went last week it seemed like most people
were wearing masks and I felt a bit like a leper. heh heh
So yesterday, I wore a mask inside - first time ever
during this time.

Well, this is a thick, better than average, dust mask and
I hated wearing it at work and didn't like it in the
grocery store either. Damn thing wanted to suffocate me.
With it on, you end up breathing less oxygen and more
CO2. I actually pulled it off my face a few times.

Oh well. Store seems to be getting back to normal. I'll start
going once a week now. Going early is the key to avoid
crowds but then, that's always been when I go.

This week our town decided to make mask - wearing mandatory in public. However, WHERE CAN YOU GET A FUCKING MASK...!!!???

I've ordered a couple, but they will take some time to get here...and may I add that the prices are a true rip - off...just got an email notice from one of the retailers, tracking shows that it will be shipped from CHINA...so those bastids will get my $32.00...

Until then, I've got a scarf that will do, and a friend whose wife is in health care is sending me several, should arrive very soon...

Requiring PPE when there is virtually NONE available is very poor planning...

Yep...last several visits stock was getting somewhat back to normal. However, now will peeps start hoarding meat as the processing plants are shutting down...

Good move. The world's seas are being over-fished and more vegetarians
will just exacerbate the problem. The biggest catch was in 1996 and it
has been declining since.

It is also painful to watch a fish taken out of water and left to die.

Vegan is the way to go if you care about life in the future.

Saw this posted in another group. I'm not a fan of Michael Moore but I
skimmed through this and found it interesting. It shows the hypocrisy
of the green energy movement and how the earth is worse for it.

Electric cars, solar panels, windmills are causing a lot of
environmental damage. Bio Mass plants are deforesting the US and we are
shipping trees to Europe.

A properly composted pile doesn't stink, John. You just did it
wrong. I'll bet you just dumped things on the pile and never
turned it occasionally with soil mixed in so it rotted.

Google "composting" for your next pile.

The purpose of bacon is to preserve meat. If it can't last past the artificial
"sell by" date, it's not bacon.

Y'all got it bad there , around here it's pretty much business as
usual - with masks on a lot of folks . We haven't had shortages for a
while now , last week there was quite a bit of TP on the WM shelves -
even the cheap stuff . My wife grew up dirt poor in a single parent
(mostly , except for the perv stepdad) and they often wondered where the
next meal was coming from . She refuses to live like that , and that's
fine with me . And so we keep a pretty good supply of basic ingredients
on hand . Not much in the way of prepared stuff , we prefer to build
from scratch .

I normally keep a good stock but we've been on lockdown longer than most.
We're only allowed one trip to the store every two weeks and things are
being rationed. I did get paper towels today but there was a limit of one
package. So 6 rolls as that was the only kind they had.

Good luck with your next shopping trip!

The county she's in doesn't say anything about limits on grocery store trips:

Nah. I'm a dummy, remember? Just a random thought. Could be
right though. You don't know anymore than I do. Or do you?

Speaking of PhD's though. My nifty brother has one in Chemistry.
He worked on a team that actually won a Nobel Prize. Although
only the boss of the team was awarded with it (or maybe just
accepted it), the entire team traveled to where ever to accept
the award. Somewhere in Europe.

I don't know as much as a microbiologist. I might know more than you.
Apart from taking a quiz, I don't know how we'd measure it.

That would depend on the subject of the quiz.

Here's an interesting thing. I once looked up the US citizen
test for imigrants to get their citizenship. I have a friend
that took it once.

I was curious about it so I found a sample test and took it
just to see if a US citizen (at least me) could pass it
without studying.
I got 47-48 out of the 50 questions right. Had to guess on a
couple of them.

Interesting to do in your spare time. :)

Microbiology, of course. Virology would be more pertinent.

If Bruce ever moves to the US and talks like he does, someone
would just shoot him in the face. Quick and easy with no regrets.

They got rules about that if she's a patient of yours. If she's a tenant, I
suppose it'll be okay. Of course, you're gonna have to offer a discount on
the rent. My suggestion is that you get an agreement on that first before
allowing a tenant access to your hamster or if your hamster wants to spend
some fun time on her hamster wheel.

Same with me. I love bananas yellow with still a
touch of green on the peel. Nice and firm.

They don't last long at all though so I also just buy
2-3 at a time. Once the peel starts with the brown
spots, I don't care for them.
