You know, like we were able to when we were young. Minimum wage never allowed that. I made slightly more than minimum wage at my first job and had to have a roommate to help with the bills. I suppose it's a cheap way to set up a business. I really liked the corn/onion cake. It was sweet and savory with a distinct taste of black pepper. My daughter likes going out to that shipping container and I could tell that these new flavor combinations are inspiring her to bake something new. https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/AStPL5P_QPWDYcXjQrIn1w.Phim27bRhxIOBq4gg1wfaP |

| Michael OConnor <mpoconnor7@aol.com>: Jun 04 11:08PM -0700 They had on his "Good Eats Reloaded" episode over the weekend where he made buttermilk biscuits, which is something I had never tried to make from scratch before. I went ahead and recorded the show on my DVR and tried his recipe. I didn't have the digital metric scale (I need to get one of those things) for measuring out the flour and had to use my old non-digital postal scale, but I did find lard at the Walmart instead of the leaf lard he used. I did use the AP flour with baking soda and baking powder as he did, but they didn't have the low-fat buttermilk, I had to use regular. I wound up making four batches, the first two came out like hockey pucks because they were too dry, and I found I had to add a little more regular milk, about a 1/4 cup extra (because I had just enough buttermilk to make two more full batches) to each of the final two batches, as the dough wasn't quite doughy enough once I was done mixing it together. (I'd made biscuits using Bisquick a couple times over the years and knew what to expect the dough to be like and it was still too dry.) The last two batches came out really good. I'll never make biscuits with Bisquick again. https://www.cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/alton-brown/buttermilk-biscuits-reloaded-5484407 |

Switches easily from pounds and ounces to grams. Home made biscuits are SO MUCH better than anything bought. |

However I really don't do food entertaining anymore so am not >going to redo the kitchen :) Appliances these days are great. When I was shopping for my new dishwasher I saw all sorts. There are slimline ones, about 1/2 to 2/3 the width of a standard one, some with 2 independently operating drawers. I even saw one with a bottom rack that pulls out and lifts up to the same height as the top one, for ease of loading and unloading without having to keep bending over. I chose a large but standard type one as I couldn't see the point in spending thousands for a fairly utilitarian appliance. I also saw a clothes washing machine that was a front loader on top with a second slide out small top loader underneath. Can't really see the point. I suppose you could do a small load of delicates in the bottom while doing a full load of normal stuff on top. I love big appliance stores, just like my husband likes power tool shops. JB |
