A few years back a tree did fall on my house. It was actually just a brunch of a tree, but it was a huge tree and the branch was close to 2 feet in diameter. My insurance company took care of it. The tree guy called the broker and said he had been told that it was branch, but that the branch was bigger than most trees. The insurance company sent a structural engineer to check the roof for truss damage. They paid for an entire new roof, new eavestroughing, fascia and soffits, a repair to stucco and even replaced the Allugard screening.... $24,000 > This gardener guy has been mooching off you for *years*. I often wander about veterans' drug and alcohol issues being blamed on PTSD. I was in the reserves for a while and it was very much a drinking culture. We went on exercises with the regular forces and it was no surprise that it was the same. A couple years ago I read my father's diary from 1943, I was surprised at the number of times his entry indicated they had gone out and got drunk the night before. I never thought of him as a drinker. He never had more than one or two drinks. When I was in the reserves. the drinking age here was 21. We were 16-17. Our armory had three messes; officers', sergeants' and men's. Our bartender was one of the few who were over 21. When we went on exercises we had two priorities upon arrival. The first was to set up our shops and the the second was to set up the mess. We were do trades training during the day, play silly bugger in the dark, and then stay up and drink most of the night. > the state changed it to age 19 and suddenly I wasn't allowed to legally > drink anymore. I hit 19 and the state changed it to 21. Arbitrary > numbers. Our drinking age in Ontario was 21. Sixteen miles away in Niagara Falls NY the drinking age was only 18, but there was no shortage of bars that would serve us underage, 15 in my case. The year I was to turn 21 the drinking age in Ontario dropped to 18. I thought it really unfair that my brother had a birthday coming up and could legally drink 3 weeks after I could. After a few years Ontario boosted it up a year to 19 because 18 years were still in highschool and providing alcohol to their younger friends. Meanwhile, NY raised its drinking age to 21. An entire section of downtown Niagara Falls NY shut down. All the bars that had been catering to underage Canadians suddenly had no customers, and now the American kids were going to Canada to drink. > silly wine cooler things, I shudder to think about it) and no one ever > asked me for ID. Now that I'm almost 60, if I want to buy anything > containing alcohol I have to show my ID. Go figure. :) In Ontario you have to take a course and be Smart Serve certified to serve alcohol. A server must ask for ID unless the person looks to be 25... 6 years older than the drinking age. You are also expected to monitor alcohol consumption and you cannot serve someone who appears to be intoxicated. |
