Maybe to impress you. The men I know who served in the wartime military
never steer their conversation that way around me, and I know quite a few.
I can listen quietly when two are recounting their experiences to each
other from afar. I have no right to join the conversation.
Well...one friend who served on a swift boat told me of a time he fell
overboard in the Tonkin Gulf and treaded water for forty five minutes until
the boat came back. I have another friend that served on one and has never
told me squat.

My father had a long association with air cadets. When I was young I
knew that he had been overseas but all he had said was that he had been
on ground crew servicing Hurricanes and Spitfires. It wasn't until I was
almost 18 that someone from Denmark tracked him down to get his story
about being shot down over Denmark and escaping over to Sweden. Later
on he wrote the story of his amazing escape. He is documented as being
the first Allied airman to escape from occupied Denmark.

My uncle Bill was an infantry officer who had fought his way through
Sicily and Italy. The only story I heard about from him was how he had
been sent in to check out a town the Germans had been holding. They
thought the Germans had left but weren't sure. He let a platoon down a
muddy hill through the rain, crossed a creek and into the town where he
was to ring the church bell if it was all clear. Once he had done that
he sat down to rest and check his equipment. It turned out that his
pistol barrel was packed with mud from one of his falls. If he had had
to fire at anyone it probably would have blown up.

Years later I came across a newspaper clipping about that incident. He
was the first one across the Hitler Line. It was a significant step in
the Italian campaign, but for him it was just a funny story about
bumbling through the mud.

One was an ex-b/f's neighbor. He could talk for hours on end about his
wartime experiences and how he was "Patton's right-hand man." Boyfriend
would be in his garage working and the neighbor talked constantly about
his time in the service. I'd see him heading across the yard and I'd
give him about 20 or 30 minutes to chew the fat then I'd go tell b/f his
mother was on the phone to give him a break.

Another was a guy I worked with. I'd just interrupt him and tell him we
had to get to work.

Smokers are indirect heat.

I guess I don't keep up on that.

Thanks. That would take longer to come to true heat, and unless
maintained with more fuel (charcol for those), drop lower so a slower
cook ratio. Pit roasted (Hawaii style) takes the time you used, plus a
little.

I use my Weber for about two hours or until I no longer see smoke. Sometimes
that means about 2½ hours of smoke. I could continue smoking on the Weber
but that would involve a lot of coals being on one side. Then they die, then
banking fresh coals and wood chips on the other side and going from side to
side with new coals and chips. I'd be losing a lot of time getting new coals ready.

What I'd love to have is one of those Bradley smokers! I just can't justify
the price.

Dosage calculations use a LOT of math.

I was lucky, as I know Dimensional Analysis! ;-) Makes dosage calcs easy!

Ft/sec to miles/hr, shit like that!

Oops, I know that, like a Gross of Bottle Rockets! In Jr High I had a callog from a fireworks stand in Saint Charles, so I took orders from others in my classes to make the order over $50 so I could get a free Gross of Bottle Rockets! :-)

Then my friend Mark and I rode our bicycles from Crestwood to Saint Charles and over the river on I-70 to get them! Problem was, it was late like 5PM or later when we got them, so Mark called HIS parents to come get us! And they did!

:-)

At least simple math and multiplication isn't.

Of course football fans were outraged. The demographic tends to lean
right and they tend to be patriotic. My country right or wrong. They are
not unlike Gary who sometimes admits he does not like Trump but things
that the position has to be respected. The players who were taking a
knee are not the poor oppressed residents of the ghetto. Most of them
have been to college and are earning big bucks. Some of the
quarterbacks are making $20 million a year or more. At the low end are
the running backs making a paltry half million bucks a year. Not bad
for playing a game. .

You weren't there so you don't know. The question should be how he got
there. Lot's of people get arrested and some of them resist... and that
is when the use of force is stepped up.

> ignoring all the pleas to let up because they're killing him, the

This incident really sucked. The cop was totally wrong to kneel on his
neck. It will be interesting to see if the trial looks into his training
and it turns out that was what he had been trained to do. It doesn't
help that the cop was dealing with a difficult situation and then has to
deal with a crowd protesting his action. That can only make a bad
situation worse.

People have every reason to protest this incident. Unfortunately, the
protests have turned into rioting. Just like every other similar
incident there were lots of people who were more interested in a free TV
than in social justice, and their violent actions will reinforce the
stereotypes that lead people to dismiss the legitimacy of the protest.

You have to get a cool mask. I realize that you can only see my eyes, the
top of my head, my thumbs-up and my wife-beater shirt because of the desert
camo making my face invisible, but I'm stylin'.

I was channel surfing and stopped at the History channel to check out
Presidents at War. I tuned in just in time to see the prelude to D Day
and they showed a B 52 dropping its bombload on Normandy. I had not
been aware that the US was so technologically advanced that it could be
using B52s 11 years before they went into service.
