Ah. That would be where Ed and I pay for it and somebody else gets it for free.

In the grand scheme of things, I think the country would be better off with
basic national health insurance, and people (or employers) could buy plans
that would provide more deluxe coverage.

But I don't expect to see it in my lifetime.

I'd also like to see farm subsidies drastically reworked to advantage
fruit and vegetable growers rather than corn, corn, corn.

Additionally, I'd like a million bucks. (Hey--while I'm wishing I might
as well add that one in.)

I don't think that anyone thinks it is free. Most of us up here are well
aware that our health care system is paid for through taxes, Yet, the
appreciate the fact that we have a damned good health care system, that
we pay less for health care than Americans do, and that everyone is
covered.

Switzerland has a good system, all are required to have insurance, and it is totally provided by private insurance firms (most choose higher cost complementary - a "Cadillac" policy - insurance and this is where the companies make their profits):

"Swiss are required to purchase basic health insurance, which covers a range of treatments detailed in the Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance. It is therefore the same throughout the country and avoids double standards in healthcare. Insurers are required to offer this basic insurance to everyone, regardless of age or medical condition. They are not allowed to make a profit off this basic insurance, but can on supplemental plans...

The compulsory insurance can be supplemented by private "complementary" insurance policies that allow for coverage of some of the treatment categories not covered by the basic insurance or to improve the standard of room and service in case of hospitalisation. This can include complementary medicine, routine dental treatments, half-private or private ward hospitalisation, and others, which are not covered by the compulsory insurance...

As far as the compulsory health insurance is concerned, the insurance companies cannot set any conditions relating to age, sex or state of health for coverage. Although the level of premium can vary from one company to another, they must be identical within the same company for all insured persons of the same age group and region, regardless of sex or state of health. This does not apply to complementary insurance, where premiums are risk-based...

My guess is that America will get a national health coverage. The top 1% will try to convince you that it's impossible. Obviously, it is not. My guess is that covid-19 will leave, in its wake, a lot of people with long-term damage to their bodies. This could kick-start such a system. If you-know-who is successful in torpedoing the ACA, that could also kick-start a national health system.

Well they can't. One has to make up strange scenarios to justify the unjustifiable i.e., shooting someone in the back.

The latest outrage to come out of the states is the death of Elijah McClain - a gentle, probably neurologically atypical, young man who was killed by the cops on his way home. My guess is that the police are going to have a little trouble portraying him as a dangerous negro thug drug dealer.

In 2012 I bought another .38 at Bass Pro Shop for $550 total but got their
credit card and got 10% off. With the reward points I've received I should
almost be able to open an ammo shop. Just kidding, but I have bought
several gun-related items there with my points and a couple of non-gun
related things.

Since I already had my carry permit, 12 or 13 years at that point, and no
criminal history, my approval for another purchase went through the
background check system lickety-split.

He is probably referring to the guy in Atlanta that was shot in the
back. A good expert can show the difference between being shot in the
back and being hit in the back.

There is a stance called Phoencian turn where you twist around to the
person you are attacking but still leave a portion of your back, not
your front exposed. When the guy was shooting the taser at the cop he
was turned like that so when the cop reacted and shot he was hit in the
back. We're talking milliseconds here.

I saw a picture posted on FB a couple days ago, cop's eye view of a guy
running away but turned around aiming a gun at the cop. A defensive
shot would have hit the guy in the back. That's what happened in the
recent case in Atlanta. The "suspect", armed with a cop's taser, was
running away but turned and fired it at the cop behind him.

I saw the video and he was indeed running away a.n.d. turning to fire the
taser at the cop. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

It is pretty good stuff. Cheese works its umami magic on cauliflower. It's a vegetable that sorely needs it.

That's for sure. When steamed it definitely needs something to add flavor.
But the roasting/grilling does wonders for that poor old ho-hum vegetable.

For those of us who don't particularly like cheese, a little browning of the
cauliflower goes a long way to add umami. And it has the advantage of being
low in calories, which is a plus for most people.

I really like cauliflower once in a while. AFAIAC, cheese does nothing
special for it. It is good on its own.

Maybe juries should not know the penalties the accused is facing. They
are supposed to listen to the evidence and decide on the basis of that
whether or not the person did it.

In theory, many places have to pay you your regular pay minus the jury
pay. My employer said the paperwork was more than they would save
making the adjustment.

That's a tough situation. Way it a mental problem? Need to feed his
kids? Just to cheap to pay? Perhaps some other intervention would be
more appropriate.

In reality, if he was caught three times he probably got away with it
many times too. The purpose of the 3X rule is to discourage but
evidently does not always work.

least it defrayed my cost for parking.

I was not eligible for jury duty because of my job, but I did have to go
to court as a witness for various police forces over the years. I would
be paid a witness fee. I would cash that cheque and write one of equal
value and turn it over to my boss along with the paperwork and I would
be paid my regular pay, and that was a hell of a lot more than the
paltry witness fee.

LOL thinking about a guy who told me he was going to fight one of my
tickets so that I would have to come in to court on my Day off. I told
him that was not a problem. That court house was 5 miles from my house.
It would take me 15 minutes to get there. That was a light court for
us so it rarely lasted more than an hour. I would get travel allowance
and time and a half for overtime for a minimum of four hours. Go for
it.
