All they have done so far is made it worse. Instead of restoring order
they make it look like we live in a military state where the thugs on
the street are replaced by thugs wearing camo.

That's young folks for you - they always want things to change. The old folks always want things to remain the same.

It's a pretty good idea to get the cops out of military gear and take away their military toys. Send all that military gear, vehicles, and ordnance, to South Korea. That's the right thing to do.

So do I. She appears to be the only person in the universe who does
not know Kuthe lives in "Da Loo".

There's that, too! I can only think of one person who might have done
this and I'm not pointing fingers.

I'm trying to picture the scenario. Let's say I called your local
police over a comment you (or anyone here) made that I didn't like. Not
that it would happen, mind you, just trying to imagine how that
conversation might go. Hi, there's this person on RFC (what?) Uh, it's
a cooking newsgroup. (What?) It's a cooking group on Usenet. (What?) I
didn't like what she wrote, would you please go knock on her door and
arrest her? I'm pretty sure they'd write me off as a nut.

Julie Bove did not call the cops on John.

It's 3 in the morning and I'm eating a burrito filled with beans, cheese, quinoa, and a spicy sauce. It's rolled up and fried and I'm as happy as a clam.

He has chickens and a rooster or more. That's how it usually
works.

Beats me, I haven't lived there in decades. We flew in and went to a market to get some supplies. Just before we got out of the car there was a news report that Keith Moon had died. My mind was pondering heavily on his death and then how milk was ridiculously priced. That was certainly a milestone day for me.

Only if the rooster(s) have access to the hens. That's how it usually
works. :)

Uh... the "gold rush" in San Fransisco you speak of ended in 1855.
There have been a few upgrades to the city since then, not to mention an
earthquake that destroyed quite a lot. I guess you haven't priced real
estate in the Bay area lately. I watched an episode of 'House Hunters'
a few days ago. $1.5 million might get you a one bedroom/1 bath condo
in the Bay area these days. You'd need a budget of closer to $1.7
million to get 2 bedrooms. (When I say "condo" I'm talking about row
houses - maybe you can relate better if you imagine a row of Brooklyn
brownstones.)

The last time I was in San Francisco (yep, it was 1969) Dad had been
transferred to Thailand. We ate at a Chinese restaurant the night
before we had to catch the flight. I'm pretty sure the food was dirt cheap.

Jill, just this morning I read your post about your lunch
yesterday...eggs, bacon and sourdough toast. And you included
a picture of it.

Then you described your birthday dinner of scallops, etc.

I wrote several posts this morning and a response to this
was the first one sent. Or not. It hasn't shown up so
might have been lost somehow.

I'll attempt to recreate what I wrote below:
---------------------------------------------
Jill, your lunch looks very good.
And your birthday dinner sounds good too.

I just read this this morning so I wish you a
one-day-late happy birthday.
---------------------------------------------

That's not exact but covers the gist of my post.

I do have cataracts but also diabetic neuropathy.

I don't know anything about the diabetic neuropathy, so I can't comment.

You could have your cataracts sorted out and then see who much that works?

I just hope that works!! Good luck.

Don't get your knickers in a twist. It's just a link for face masks
being sold by the Saint Louis Zoo. He said they fit *over* a respirator
- okay that sounds wrong but it doesn't really matter. I sure as heck
don't need to order masks from a zoo. I have a friend who has a sewing
machine and she's been making excellent very comfy triple layer cloth
masks in a variety of fabrics.

Still, Julia Child made a good point. Don't cook with wine you wouldn't
drink. I'm not sure this cheap "insanely sweet" red wine would make a
good marinade.

For what it's worth, Bryan. This from farmers in upstate NY, Sheldon's
area... Groundhogs dig a network of tunnels with several openings. They
kill the groundhog and put it back into an opening and fill in the hole
with dirt.

The rotting groundhog smell fills the tunnels and prevents other
groundhogs or animals from moving in. That's the common belief anyway.

I visited my inlaws at the end of the summer of 1979 and shot his
annoying groundhog that was eating up his garden. I thought we might
cook it but he stuffed down the nearest hole and covered that up with dirt.

This was in Galway, NY. A very small town...only a crossroad that
had the name.
