Dude, almost everyone who knows him dislikes him. I'm probably the only person here who actually "hates" him, and I'm the one who knows him best, not only on this NG, or even on Usenet. I've known him since the summer after 9th grade (the summer after 10th grade for him, since he's a year older), and we've had 3 apartments together. Even with all of his fuckedupnesses, he was an old friend, so I treated him as such.

Then the sick son-of-a-bitch decided that I was the primary reason for him ending up a failure, and he turned on me. He repeatedly asserted that I was a mentally ill person whom he'd diagnosed as having narcissistic personality disorder, posted that over and over on Usenet, and repeated offers of a *truce* by me were ignored. He made himself my enemy.

Obviously, you're not going to spend 100 hours delving into his Usenet posts, but if you did, you would find it very disturbing. Far from being a "free spirit," he has been plagued by the *demons* inside his own head that compelled him to do bizarre things. He is the child of a very intelligent father, and a very mentally ill mother, and he inherited both of those traits. LSD might have been his downfall, yet he still advocated its use even in his 50s.

IMO, he's a fundamentally decent person, and hasn't given anyone here other than me a reason to "hate" him, but he has a messed up mind. He's pathetic, and nicer persons than me might find him pitiable. I guess that I don't even really hate him anymore, and these days there are a lot of folks more worthy of my capacity to hate.

Goya 'buy-cott' begins as customers load up on product after Trump backlash
The CEO of Goya Foods sparked backlash when he praised President Trump

"Many took to social media to express their displeasure with Goya Foods CEO
Robert Unanue after he praised President Trump at a White House event on
Thursday, but others are flipping the narrative and calling for a Goya Foods
"buy-cott."

GOYA FOODS SLAMMED BY AOC, CELEBRITIES AFTER CEO PRAISES TRUMP

"My brother came up with a terrific idea and I am encouraging all to join me
in purchasing $10 worth of Goya Foods products and donating them to your
local food bank," self-described "conservatarian" radio host Mike Opelka
wrote on Twitter. "Let's push a BUY-cott, not a boycott. Let's show the
#Goyaway people what compassion can do.

Opelka's post received 27,000 likes.

"Go out today and buy your Goya foods," Fox News host Mark Levin wrote on
Twitter.

"Most of these people fronting about a #GOYABOYCOTT either don't use Goya
Foods anyways [a]nd most of the ones who do will cave by #NocheBuena," Sen.
Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wrote on Twitter along with an "I Love Goya" graphic.

The controversy has inspired some Goya Foods fans to give back. Virginia
resident Casey Harper started a GoFundMe on Saturday to buy Goya products to
donate food pantries. The page is already more than halfway to its $10,000
goal.

"I'm not surprised we have raised so much because people are tired of having
to walk on eggshells in political discourse," Harper told FOX Business.
"Also, Americans are fundamentally generous people so a chance to feed the
hungry and stand up to cancel culture was an easy win."

Goya Foods touted its charitable giving on Friday after calls for a boycott,
including from progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Goya Foods said it
has given "two million pounds of food to food banks across the nation who
are in desperate need of food for families impacted by COVID19."

Robert Unanue, head of the New Jersey-based company, said Friday the boycott
is "a reflection of a division that exists today in our country" that is
"killing our nation."

We're with the president. We're with this country — right, left, center, up
and down," Unanue told "Varney & Co."

Goya Foods claims to be the largest Hispanic-owned food label in the
country.

Unanue said Americans were "truly blessed" to have Trump as a leader while
speaking at a Hispanic Prosperity Initiative at the White House on Thursday.

Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue not apologizing for Trump support amid boycott

Robert Unanue says boycott is 'a reflection of a division that exists today
in our country'

The CEO of Goya Foods is not apologizing for supporting President Trump in a
move that's sparked outrage among politicians and thought leaders calling
for Americans to boycott its products.

Robert Unanue, the head of the New Jersey-based company that claims to be
the largest Hispanic-owned food label in the country, told FOX Business
Friday the boycott is "a reflection of a division that exists today in our
country" that is "killing our nation."

We choose to love and to build and that's what we've been doing, looking for
prosperity," Unanue said on FOX Business Network's "Varney & Company,"
where he continued to defend Trump.

"We're with the president. We're with this country -- right, left, center,
up and down," Unanue said.

Unanue was invited to speak at the White House on Thursday for Trump's
Hispanic Prosperity Initiative, an executive order to bolster education and
economic opportunities for Hispanic Americans. During the event, Unanue
briefly remarked on the company's history, which was founded in 1936 by
Unanue's grandfather who immigrated to the U.S. from Spain.

"We're all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like President
Trump, who is a builder," Unanue said, relating Trump to the company's
founding story. "That's what my grandfather did, he came to this country to
build, to grow to prosper. And so we have an incredible builder and we pray
for our leadership, our president, and our country that we will continue to
prosper and to grow." Unanue went on to say Goya would donate 1 million cans
of Goya chickpeas and 1 million of the New Jersey-based company's other food
products to American food banks aimed at helping those impacted by the
coronavirus pandemic..."

The whole thing is silly, IMO. I don't care what he thinks of the
president. I would be more concerned how they treat their employees and
the growers of what they buy from farmers.

Also nice they are donating to a food bank too.

As often as not, the first sentence he says to me every day is some version of, "What's for dinner?" Often, the first thing he says to his mother is, "Are you hungry," because she makes him things like crepes with fresh fruit for breakfast. She is the sweet foods person, and I am the savory foods person. She's obsessed with baking, and has even taken master classes from this guy: https://us.valrhona.com/chocolate-culture-article/meet-chef-nathaniel-reid

My wife recently had a birthday, and her sister bought her a cake from Nathaniel Reid. St. Louis is a small pond, and Reid is a big fish. My wife got another present from her parents, a book called, *Artful Baking*, that she requested after having checked it out from the library.

You *can* make great cakes. Baking cakes, unlike cooking, merely involves following instructions to the letter, and unlike pastries or pies, ambient humidity is not a big issue.

No one can keep an invincible tummy forever, but whenever I have stomach problems, I always run to a bowl of wheaties with flaxseed, etc...

We have a local FB food group. A woman recently posted a pic of a pizza with
a rather thick crust and asked,"Where can I get a real, Italian pizza like
this, here?" We all laughed. That pizza didn't resemble any pizza made in
Italy and clearly it was something made here as it had the red and white
checkered tablecloth underneath it as well as a shaker of Kraft Parmesan
cheese.

Just to clarify my comment about pastels of Brazil. They are thin dough
folded around fillings. Normally not filled with sauce. Can be made with
what ever you like. I knew a guy who always got mozzarella and cheddar for
some reason. Not my thing but hey to each there own.

Brazilian fast-food:

I asked my Canadian/Italian friend last night. He said a cheese calzone
should never have sauce inside but he does put sauce in his eggplant ones.

I do't say it's bad stuff, but adding it to a meatloaf feels like
