I save time, money, and effort using Amazon and many other online retailers... "the world is at my fingertips", not to so long ago that was in the realm science fiction... Example: I've just started using Grubhub and Uber Eats a bit, these delivery service platforms are pretty slick. I only use them occasionally, but for many they are a lifeline, especially now... Except for his no phone thing, exactly how I and many here grew up... "the bad old daze"... We are still a big manufacturing power (after China and the EU), except that the low - tech stuff has been off - shored...and we lead the world in some hi - tech areas; services exports displaced manufacturing in 1990/91... Much of manufacturing is now "skilled", I know this because I work in the field. You need good math and computer skills, and an ability to learn. These can be good - actually GREAT - jobs. There will be a shortage of 400K welders *alone* in the US - that is the size of the *entire* welding field in the US; same with CNC: WIKI: "The welding industry will face a shortage of about 400,000 welders by 2024, according to the American Welding Society. The average age of a welder is 55 and the coming wave of retirements will leave the US with a great deficit in skilled welders in the work force..." https://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2021/05/27/manufacturing-open-jobs-us "A CNC operator punches coordinates into a computer numerical control milling machine, giving instructions to a robotic arm that will cut a block of plastic, wood or metal into a precise shape. It could become anything from an electrical outlet to a medical screw used in surgery... "The average hourly wage for American manufacturing employees is $29.33, according to the Labor Department...unlike some manufacturing jobs of the past, it's difficult to automate or outsource the skills... CNC is already highly automated, with a robotic arm doing the actual physical milling...there will always be a need for workers to program and operate the machines, and their proliferation throughout so many industries means job security for people who learn how to operate them... CNC is just one of the skills that American manufacturers say are in short supply among the labor force. Another is welding..." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_in_the_United_States "The largest manufacturing industries in the United States by revenue include petroleum, steel, automobiles, aerospace, telecommunications, chemicals, electronics, food processing, consumer goods, lumber, and mining. The United States leads the world in airplane manufacturing. American companies such as Boeing, Cessna, Lockheed Martin, and General Dynamics produce a vast majority of the world's civilian and military aircraft in factories stretching across the United States... The largest exports [2016] were transportation equipment ($252B), Chemicals ($174B), Computers a nd Electronic Products ($116B) and "Machinery-Except Electrical" ($109B)... While U.S. manufacturing employment is down, output was near a record level in 2017 in real GDP terms, indicating productivity (output per worker) has also improved significantly. This is likely due to automation, global supply chains, process improvements, and other technology changes... U.S. manufacturing employment has declined steadily as a share of total employment, from around 28% in 1960 to 8% in March 2017. Manufacturing employment has fallen from 17.2 million persons in December 2000 to 12.4 million in March 2017, a decline of about 5.7 million or about one-third even as the U.S. population ballooned from 220 million to 330 million in the same time frame. An estimated 1-2 million of the job losses in manufacturing 1999–2011 were due to competition with China... Employment growth in industries such as construction, finance, insurance and real estate, and services industries played a significant role in reducing manufacturing's overall share of U.S. employment. In 1990, services surpassed manufacturing as the largest contributor to overall private industry production, and then the finance, insurance and real estate sector surpassed manufacturing in 1991..." </> |
