Automatics are illegal in most places. While they can kill a number of
people from a distance, most shootings are close up.

True, but there is still the argument about their only purpose being to
kill. Target shooting and hunting are still legitimate recreational
activities and require some degree of skill, especially handguns. They
can be used for hunting for food. Swords OTOH, have no other function.
You can't hunt with them and they cannot be used as a target sport.

AFAIAC, anyone who commits murder with a firearm should be subject to
capital punishment. I am not a fan of subjecting legally licensed law
abiding gun owners to ridiculous restrictions and outright bans because
criminals who are already violating multiple gun control regulations are
using them to commit crimes and to murder.

If you were good with a sabre you could do a number on a crowd of
people. A group of people armed with sabres could be pretty savage.
They used to be used quite effectively in warfare when firearms were a
single shot deal.

A hunter is a borderline psychopath, at least.

Very far-fetched.

Semi-automatic. There have been no mass murders with a legally
obtained, fully automatic weapon in the U.S. since the St. Valentine's
Day Massacre. (That might be a slight exaggeration.)

It's expensive to get a license for a fully automatic weapon. Most
mass murderers are not organized enough to do so.

Two principal laws regulate fully automatic weapons: The National
Firearms Act of 1934 and the Firearm Owner's Protection Act of 1986.

The purpose of my husband's handguns and long guns is to shoot at paper
targets.

Not at all. He was just an oddball loner, unremarkable
in a rural area with many oddballs.

That is a meme beloved of the gun lobby in USA. It
totally ignores the fact that this was the second mass
shooting in a few years , after Hungerford. The Hungerford
killer used semi automatic rifles to kill random people
including children before entering a school where he
killed himself.

Hungerford resulted in the Firearms Act 1988,semi-
automatic and pump-action rifles and shotguns were banned,
except those chambered for .22 ammunition.

Because of that ban, the Dunblane killer used handguns,
which were still legally available under license.
The British public was sickened by another mass
shooting, that was the reason for the handgun ban.

That's simulated killing.

I made some Thai curry last night. I gave it a taste and it was a little harsh. A bit of sugar fixed that. '

Windows in S mode will run pretty good and fast on a low end computer because it's not Windows. You won't be able to run any of your old Windows desktop client programs. You're pretty much stuck with using Google Groups. That would be a deal breaker for a lot of rfc'ers. The only reason to stick with real Windows is that you need to run your old Windows programs. Otherwise, you're better off using Windows S mode and running apps from the Microsoft Store.
Microsoft tried this before with Windows RT in 2011. They discontinued it after a couple of years. My guess is that's what's going to happen with Windows S. Windows S will probably still be unpopular with Windows users even though it's what Microsoft needs to bring their OS for the modern era.
