My guess is that the chilled dough has water condensing on the surface which acts as a medium for yeast to grow. When the bread is baked, the water flashes off and you get that nasty smell. This afternoon I had a sub sandwich from Quiznos. I shared a "Lobster & Seafood Scampi Bake" sandwich with my wife. It was pretty good - at least I think it was. My taste is kinda messed up. I have no idea what the heck I was eating but my guess that it wasn't lobster chunks but some kind of formed product. Oh well, it's probably better not knowing. :) === I am very pleased you enjoyed your lunch:)) As for dough ... as I pointed out in another post, I have been baking bread for decades and have never, ever, had the smell that comes from Subway! -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

It's the aroma of yeast infections eminating from their employees. lol And there's no bread baking at Subway, least not at the one here, they use those frozen preformed raw loaves and bake them same as those frozen biscuits from a tube... the same as many supermarket baked goods departments... I don't call that bread baking any more than I call those Pillsbury Dough Boy biscuits baking. Subway's concept of bread baking is the same as baking a frozen pizza, or toasting Eggos. |

What's different is that we don't use pre-made, frozen, dough. My guess is that the loaves are simply defrosted and baked. Subway could probably fix the problem by changing their procedures and processes but you don't really want to mess with success. |

I checked for vegan cheese sales locally but didn't think to look for a recipe. I've never made or tried to make cheese. Sqwertz <swertz@cluemail.compost>: May 02 10:56AM -0500 > In Mexican lingo the "re" prefix means extra good. refried beans means > extra good fried beans, does not mean fried twice. As usual, you couldn't be more wrong. 're' modifies the word to which it's attached. When attached to a noun it means 'more' or 'extra'. Similarly, when attached to a verb is means 'mucho/muchas' or 'very'. Frijoles refritos means beans are cooked very well - as in well fried or very fried (with fried being a synonym for cooked). It has nothing to do with 'good'. I thought you said your wife was supposedly some flavor of Mexican? Must be one of those White Jewish Mexicans. > a small quantity of meat from what's locally hunted, often gibnut. A > lot of Mexican dishes contain beans from the stew pot, no wonder they > are refered to as 'beaners'. Give it up Pussy Katz. Beans are usually eaten quite plain in Mexico. Refried/mashed and simply seasoned whole beans are the norm, not mixed into other dishes. And beans and rice are practically never mixed together except on the plate. The only thing you're an expert at is being an expert moron. -sw |

The dumpster thing (several times) was a sign, too. Last time was 7 months before he died, and previously a year and half before that. He was throwing away a lot of his possessions. To have so much trash that you need to call in a dumpster a couple-few times is very odd. People should only have to do that when they're remodeling. I think it's very likely he was under the watch of social services and they had told him to clean up his house. Especially considering the records regarding the value of his property after his death - he must have really trashed the house. The highlights of Andy's life seemed to be playing the weird guy in the checkout lines, squeezing bread at Trader Joes, and posting to RFC. -sw |
"itsjoannotjoann@webtv.net" <itsjoannotjoann@webtv.net>: May 02 08:46AM -0700 Just and fyi for those that might like to catch the new show. Tonight on my local PBS station at 7:00 p.m. CST (8:00 p.m. EST) starts the series "Victorian Slum House." This is a new season of the previous shows such as "Pioneer House" and hopefully it will be as interesting and entertaining as the previous shows. |
sockmonkeyNH@comcast.net: May 02 08:39AM -0700 I love a good coffee frappe, haven't had a decent one since Woolworth's went out a million years ago. Here, a milkshake is just milk and flavoring, like a frothy chocolate milk. A frappe is made with ice cream, milk, and flavoring. Damn, now I'm really missing Woolworth's, we used to stop there every day after school. Four or five of us used to chip in to come up with 25 cents for a big plate of French fries, then cover the whole thing with ketchup. Our Woolworth had a resident bird with a filthy mouth. The older kids used to teach it dirty words, so you'd be just innocently shopping around the store when all of a sudden you'd be assaulted with screeching loud obscenities. Good old days, I wonder whatever happened to that old bird. Denise in NH |
