Those cold submarine sandwiches at grocery stores are pretty appealing. Maybe some microwaved canned beans or deli potato salad. One of those cold pies like edward's brand key lime or a Popsicle for dessert. That time of year is really close at hand now. |

Corn relish sounds good. Neighbor is making some sort of pickled onion dish. I'm sure it will be good. As hot as it is maybe she'll suggest we eat inside. Watching my usual "Law & Order: SVU" Saturday marathon and later two vintage flicks: 1963's "Sunday In New York" a coy sex/romance comedy with a very young Jane Fonda (she's wondering if she should go "all the way" with her beau, lol) and the 1948 Doris Day musical "Romance on the High Seas", her first movie, and she knocks me out in it. Both on brand - new Blu-ray transfers...this week have been watching the new Blu-ray of 1953's "War of the Worlds", the new hi - def transfer is astounding, like watching for the first time..."They'll STOMP Los Angeles FLAT...!!!" > -- > Best > Greg Have you ever seen the Doris Day movie "Julie"? It and "Midnight Lace" are two thrillers she made and after finishing them she said never again. She couldn't handle the constant on-edge intensity both required. "Julie" was produced by her and her husband and it's low budget of course but still good. Here's a tidbit for you. Ann Robinson who played the female lead in the original "War of the Worlds" is in this movie toward the end with Doris. |

I'm not a fan of turkey but they salted them in the fridge overnight, then seasoned with pepper and a bit of cayenne and smoked them over hickory chips, then shredded them just like pork butt and served it on soft buns. No coleslaw on top! Iceberg lettuce and a sauce made with mayo and a bit of horseradish and cider vinegar. Jill |

"Julie" was > produced by her and her husband and it's low budget of course but still good. I've seen both and both are very good, especially "Midnight Lace", no one can SCREAM like Doris in that movie! Also, of course, she was fab in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and her role in the very dark musical "Love Me or Leave Me"... She is a person I admire very much, she had a lotta crap in her life, many could not have handled it, but she she had integrity and strength and handled all with aplomb, never complained, always strove ahead and was a kind person...not only did her dud last husband/manager croak leaving her penniless, but her son Terry was the original target of the Manson gang that bloody 1969 night, he was not with Sharon Tate and the others. Terry AND Doris had to have round - the - clock protection for awhiles afterware - GAWD! > Here's a tidbit for you. Ann Robinson who played the female lead in the > original "War of the Worlds" is in this movie toward the end with Doris. Hmmm...I LUV Ann Robinson and did not know that, now I will have to re - watch...!!! She did not have a big screen career, but she was great in everything she did, she was the female undercover cop in the 1954 "Dragnet", and a tiny role as a "dancer" in the 1959 "Imitation of Life"...when the black mother visits her pass - for - white daughter (Susan Kohner!) in the nightclub, she makes a comment about having "ants in the bathroom", she thinks that the mother is a maid arrived to get rid of the ants, lol! The Ann Robinson/Gene Barry commentary track on the "WoW" disc is a hoot, she does most of the talking and is really funny and knowledgeable...the scene where their plane crashes and they wake up in a culvert the studio had her all dolled up with "glamor" make-up, false eyelashes and such, she protested at that but went along with it,they also had her in a wig that she had trouble keeping on. She is still with us, and anyone who has dealt with her sez she is delightful, the "real deal"... My very fave "Wow" scene is when the Martin taps her on the shoulder...classic! OH, there was a 1988 TV remake, she is in that, I'll dig it up...and at the end of the 2005 Tom Cruise remake, she and Barry are at the doorway of the townhouse in Boston...a fine homage. And the scene from the original where she and Barry "meet cute" at the crater is charming... -- Best Greg |
