Digest for rec.food.cooking@googlegroups.com - 25 updates in 9 topics

Sqwertz <sqwertzme@gmail.invalid>: Jul 08 10:31AM -0500

I told him that the RFC group (what?).... the usenet group.... you
know, the rec.food.cooking group? (Oh, Yeah) was worried about him
since he usually posts dozens of times a day. I said they were
making up all sorts of crazy stories about what happened to you.

He's cooking garlic potatoes for breakfast and I could hear him
chopping in the background. I told him that's not his "Standard
breakfast, I thought it Asiago cheese bagel from Panera?".

He says Google won't allow him to post. After a few more questions I
said it sounded like his browser lost his login cookies and he just
needed to manually log in on the upper right again. He said it
always did it for him automatically.

I also found out that he has a degree in computer engineering school
and has been on the internet since ARPANET days. He has a really old
Windows XP laptop and a Mac-in-trash, and something about "Steve
Gates", but never once did he ask me who I was. I asked him,
"You're not at all curious who this is calling you?" (twice) - He
brushed that off and I re-iterated my technical support advice to
just log in manually, that I'd let everybody know he's still alive,
and we all wished him well. "OK, Bye!"

EOS. I shit you not.

I think we should all give him a call! You won't regret it!

I wonder what his version of your phone discussion will be.

It would be the exact same - I even recorded it in case he went ape.
But seeing as how it was, I would never post it to satisfy your nor
anybody else's assholyness. I even dumbed it down a little in text.
It was very cordial.

I did not ask him about his taxes nor his roof.

That is not what I meant. I was curious how he would recall that phone
conversation, not what the facts were. His recollections are likely to
be far more interesting than the facts.

Glad you got your computer working again.

I was surprised that you sounded exactly like Ving Rhames. I was
expecting you to say, "We HAVE The Meats!"

Oops! Egg in your face, eh? It sometimes helps to sit on your
suspicions for a few minutes or hours before you make an ass of
yourself.

Go ahead, ask him.... Was it not a cordial call, John?

No egg on my face. And I raised no issue re the matter of it being
cordial.

The simple fact that you doubted the context of conversation as
stated was enough for the egg. Let alone implying it wasn't cordial.

So what are YOU having for breakfast other than eggs? I'm having
those pressed oval hash browns.

If not for the bulk mailing fees the USPS would have gone bankrupt
years ago. There's more bulk mailing nowadays than ordinary 1st class
mail... all catalogues are bulk mailed, as are utility bills. Hardly
anyone sends letters anymore, today it's all email. Hardly anyone can
write a letter anymore other than on a keyboard... very few schools
still teach longhand/cursive... most youngsters today can't sign their
name. When was the last time any of yoose received hand written mail?
How many of yoose know what a Pen Pal is?

True, if you allow the moisture drawn out of the steak to evaporate and/or
if you use a lot of salt.

First it draws moisture out of the steak. Then, because the steak is now
drier than the moisture surrounding it, moisture goes back in to the steak
bringing salt with it. Eventually it achieves osmotic balance. The trick
is to not use too much salt.

If I sprinkle a little salt on a steak, wrap it up, and leave it for
an hour or more, when I come back there is no excessive moisture on the
outside of the steak, the meat is salted throughout, and it cooks up
nice and juicy because the salt on the inside tends to hold on to
the water on the inside. Much better than simply salting the exterior
at the last minute.

Not that I think you'll believe me or this guy either:

Intersting account although I thought his need to sear meat to keep in
moisture has been debunked in recent years.

Not that I eat enough steak to try it for myself.

He doesn't sear meat to keep in moisture:

[W]e all know that searing absolutely positively does not "seal in juice," right? It serves as a means of adding color and flavor and enhancing texture.

Steak is what we eat when we can't think of anything else, but don't
want breakfast for dinner. Perhaps a couple of times a month.

Depends whether you prefer the dry or juicy end. ;)
You may enjoy a forked cuke, striated.
Kirby/Pickling cukes aren't peeled so you'll enjoy those natural
bumps. LOL
I think you'd prefer the White Stallion. Hehehe

For decades I have seen friends, church ladies, magazines, TV shows
where the cook drags the tines of a fork down the cucumber or peels
just alternating thin strips of peel off the cucumber to make the
cucumber more attractive. Not me, because although I love cucumber, I
do not like the peel.

My glasses would fog up from the mask too but since my cataract
surgery no more glasses. I didn't know I had cataracts until I went
to a different eyeglass place and was examined by an Opthamologist.
Opticians mainy sell glasses, they don't examine eyes.

My wife does some quilting too but she much prefers knitting.
The N95 masks are fitted with a one way vent so the air you inhale is
filtered by the mask, when exhaling that moist air passes through the
vent, very little fogging of glasses. I started wearing the N95 mask
for mowing grass, filters out dust/pollen... Amazon had them for
cheap, a box of 12 cost like $8... I still have a bunch, they are much
more comfortable than the run of the mill paper masks sold everywhere.
I still wear an N95 for mowing. My big tractor has a cab and it has a
cabin filter, but really doesn't filter out all the fine particulates
so I still wear an N95. A paper mask is not for protecting the wearer
from the virus, it helps protect those nearby if the wearer
coughs/sneezes. For best virus protection wear a military style gas
mask. Amazon sells them but they cost.

They had quite a few retail locations and I'm sure they were hurt. Not

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is the big chain around here tanking. They
started this pre-Covid, though.

I've bought 2 cups of coffee in the last 10 years. I really gotta

I think you've earned "Southerner status" by now. It took many
years
before southern born coworkers stopped calling me a yankee. lol

Did you know that Maryland was originally a southern slave owning
state? Lincoln put a stop to that before the Civil War started.
He
didn't want Washington DC to be surrounded by southern states in
case of the impending war. Marylanders pretty much equally joined
the Union or the Confederates for the war.
