Digest for rec.food.cooking@googlegroups.com - 25 updates in 11 topics

"Julie Bove" <juliebove@frontier.com>: May 23 09:27PM -0700

I am trying to change my diet some to heal a fatty liver. I know I need to
eat more onions and celery but need to read more about what to eat. I got
some marked down organic grass fed ground beef and a big bag of green beans.
I loosely followed a recipe. The recipe said to either put the beans in
water, bring to a boil and let sit for 5 min. or... *Cue Jill* Steam them! I
opted for the boiling water.

Original recipe uses ground beef, the partially cooked green beans and a
sliced onion. I added two bell peppers that had an accident so needed to be
used soon and a good handful of grape tomatoes. Stir fry all with a little
garlic in sesame oil. I did mostly peanut with a little sesame as I find
sesame to be overwhelming. Add some beef broth or water and beef powder, 1 T
molasses and 3 T. soy sauce. Cornstarch (I used sweet rice flour) to make a
gravy. Some reviewers claimed it needed more seasoning so I added salt,
black pepper and a touch more garlic.

Serve over rice. I made brown. It's good but if I were making it just for
me, I would not use the molasses and soy sauce. I think I would prefer a
plain brown gravy.

So this is your newest At Death's Door - fatty liver? <yawn>

The last thing you should be buying is beef, let alone
bacteria-ridden marked down beef. There's a reason it's partially
brown (or about to be).

I'm not at death's door. And it's not a new condition.

I wasn't brown and it's not bacteria laden.

Wow. So I'm think you didn't even really eat there if you can't
name what you had.

Even if you've only seen COMMERCIALS for McDonalsds (you can't avoid
them, the billboards, the jingles, you KNOW their most "famous" 2
burgers.

This sounds even more unsubstantiated than Dave's Standard McD's
gripe.

FWIW, I've eaten there twice in the past 6 years. Only because it
was virtually free with the coupons. I has some "Signature
Gourmet"(?) burgers (fresh QP patties), and a 20 piece cold nuggets
prior to that.

I expected that since I don't usually force my tastes upon others
like that. But really, you should just throw it away. If you're
lucky, it should have rotted by now.

You just had three +1's for skillet method. Well, except dsi1's
suggestion - he doesn't count. But Ed and I are mostly reliable
sources - there's a reason we suggested it.

The steam from the water changes the molecular structure of the
starch in the crust back to "normal" (the reason day-olsd rice
doesn't reheat well in teh microwave without additional water), and
also helps the pizza reheat evenly. Without drying it out in the
oven. Once the water evaporates, the crust begins to crisp on the
bottom. And the pizza is like new.

I did it your way for 35 years. And think of the brownie points you
can score with your wife by discovering this new, superior way after
all these years. She might even join us here in RFC after this!
(yeah, then worlds will collide, eh?)

Note to Ed and Leo - Don't flip it. Just cover it with a lid.

But they never even give you any food until any tests or surgeries
are done. You usually only get food after surgery and during
recovery. And sometimes not even then. You're often lucky to even
get water - ice chips maybe.

I was thinking "no red" because it reminds you of blood and guts.

So if you are in there for six days they don't feed you because they may
do more tests?

I've seen red jell-o in hospitals.

I hadn't noticed. I don't think I ever got Jell-O in a hospital.

Blood tests and such, yes. But if there's a chance of upcoming
surgery or another surgery, not a chance.

> I've seen red jell-o in hospitals.

Never in the rooms. I've been in a hospital room every day for the
last 10, and 30+ days before that. Nobody ever got red jello in any
room I've been in. But everybody gets jello.

Lol. I guess many people die of starvation in American hospitals.

That's how I feel about cabbage. It's okay raw but I don't care or it
cooked. A very small amount in a soup is fine. Broccoli? I can't eat it
cooked. no matter what you do to it!

I love the broccoli stems and really don't like the tops. Nasty mouth
feel.

I saw the program last night, and old one at that and what she failed to

much she missed it and the freedom of speech.

I really see no reason why the Queen or anybody else from the royal
family should receive Trump. Let him be satisfied with
what's-er-name.
Or, let all those rowdy folks in Parliament have at him :O))
