Getting paid a couple of bucks an hour isn't the problem. The real problem is the cost of housing, education, and healthcare.

I'm not saying minimum wage is good or enough, but without it, people
could get even less.

I don't think the idea is to apply the same minimum wage to a 15 year
old and a 50 year old.

In practice, your argument is specious. It's market conditions that set the real minimum wages. If you've ever gone into a McDonald's after the current round of renovations, the corporate plans for the future would be obvious from the layout.

A 50-year-old who is laid off from his job and can't get another
one in his previous occupation might end up working for minimum
wage.

Minimum wages allow people to stuff their gullets with more cheap food but it doesn't help them afford a place to live or to educate themselves or get healthy.

I can understand your point of view - minimum wage laws help you feel better about yourself. OTOH, it doesn't really help people live like humans are supposed to. OTOH, maybe minimum wage laws work in your country. It doesn't change shit in this country - well, except make people feel better about themselves.

What concrete steps do you intend to take to rectify the
situation?

I have no solution to this problem and posting to Usenet is just so much hot air. Let's talk about dishwashers instead. :)

Yes, but I meant that the minimum wage for a 50 year old doesn't have
to be the same as for a 15 year old. In the Netherlands, the monthly
minimum wage for a 15 year old is USD 550. The minimum wage for
someone 21 and older is USD 1835.

As I said, I'm not saying minimum wage is good or enough.

I have been watching a lot more of him since I changed my satellite
programming. I never used to like him because he seemed to be way too
anal and took the fun out of cooking. I have started to appreciate him
more. He covers a lot of different foods with lots of good, helpful
information. No pretend friend guests on the show, no contests, not
"reality".

Define "deplorable". I think he can be quite funny.

Yes, that would be a better fit than a fly-over state full of

I don't think it is the business of the state to take guns out of the
hands of individuals because someone might, in a fit of depression,
commit suicide. Actually, I might prefer they have the option to do
that, provided they do it outside and not leave a horrible mess in the
house that someone else will have to clean up. Better that than to
traumatize some innocent driver just doing his job.

We had a local suicide issue. A nearby city replaced an old bridge with
a really nice looking new bridge. There is a highway that runs under the
bridge. The old bridge had its share of jumpers, but incidents were not
publicized. A few months ago the highway was shut down for hours while
the police investigated a suicide. Next thing you know, trouble souls
are acting like depressed lemmings and the new bridge was a magnet for
jumpers. People started demanding barriers to prevent people from
jumping and the bill for the barrier was going to be in the millions.
Aside from destroying the aesthetics of the design, jumpers would just
find somewhere else. Just a couple miles away there is an even higher
bridge that has been a popular jumping spot for decades, but must people
don't know about that one because they don't release any information
about suicides there. Nor to they publicize the number of people going
over Niagara Falls or jumping off the Rainbow Bridge.

My HEB bakery uses these on only a few items. I'll hand the item to
them and ask them to remove and replace the tie. And then when
they struggle with it, I say, "See? Now you know how WE feel."

I didn't realize Costco started doing this now, too, until I got my
"artisan rolls" homes last night. I'd much rather have their former
La Brea torta rolls than these things.
