Actually, you know how stations can offer on demand stuff that they've
already shown on regular TV? I kinda thought a smart TV would be able
to show that straight off the Internet. I guess you'd have to type www
addresses and search terms on the little keyboard on the back of the
remote.

We have a wifi router with a strong password , but it doesn't matter
much out here . None of my neighbors is within range , and a car parked
close enough to hack into it would probably be surrounded by hillbillies
with guns within minutes ... my wife thinks I'm paranoid for not having
a smart TV , but those things are scary if you really look into what
they're capable of . I even have a piece of black tape over the camera
of my laptop .

Ours sits on a stand as well... there's no wall space for a 55" TV...
would be difficult to mount a TV on a window or closet door.

My neighborhood 'wifi with internet' speed is 54 Mbps but oddly
it's more reliable when lower - even down to 1 Mbps.

Some days I get on and everything is lightning fast.
Other times, I connect and wait and wait and even get
disconnected. It's very annoying and unreliable from
day to day.

That was not exactly what I was referring to. I was trying to get at the
issue of how you have a society where many people reject the idea of a
society passing laws to tell how you have to do certain things that you
think should be your right to do or not, that you not be directed by the
government because that would be a nanny state, but OTOH, will will
quickly go to court to seek financial redress,

As an example.... motorcycle helmet laws. A lot of bikers don't think
they should have to wear helmets and some states allow them to ride
without one. Suppose you give someone a ride on your bike and you have a
minor accident and the passenger strikes his head. You can be damned
sure that he is going to come after your for a big financial settlement.
He didn't have to get on the bike. He could have worn a helmet. But
he made a choice. The law didn't say he had to wear one, but now he is
after your assets.

In the USA, it's Congress that's in bed with big money.
They make all the laws with little checks. Little balance.

Both are already history and not worth mentioning again.

Biden will pick some woman as a running mate but not
necessarily the best pick. It's all for the women's vote.

Trump should do the same.
As he's fired just about everyone else, why not fire
Pence and choose Nancy Pelosi for his running mate.
And even better, she would accept.

Boy, wouldn't that be a good one.

Hawaii is a state composed of minorities. We don't much care for
attributions of socioeconomic classes. We're trying to forget about our
plantation heritage. Besides, who the heck calls their neighbors "sir?"
Mostly, we show our respect to our elders, for they are the keepers of
knowledge and experience. They're called "Uncle, Auntie, tutu, Kapuna,
Sensei, Kumu."

What I can tell you about a person in Hawaii addressing their neighbor as
"sir" is that they haven't been here long and that they come from a place
where they're seen as being low on the class structure.

====

I suspect they use it in the same we way do. Simply as a mark of
respect. If I ever call you sir it certainly wouldn't be because someone is
low class. I am sorry that is how it works where you are, but please, the
next time you are in UK if someone calls you sir, please don't take it in a
bad way. Although I must say, possibly young people wouldn't do it, but my
generation would:))

Problem with old people dying their hair to look younger -
it works for awhile but eventually your face will tell
everyone that you're lying about your age. At that point
you just look silly and obviously fake.

2020 will be a lost year for the world. OTOH, my daughter made some

Let's hope not. *THAT* would be our WW3 and I suspect
those Chinese kids would win it - assuming anyone would be
a winner in WW3.

In my opinion - the Chinese will win eventually but
they are patient and will win by economics and not
with violence.

You could get a pretty good unlocked phone for under $200. I have a Motorola G6. Your bigger problem is getting a carrier that won't try to rip you off. Mostly, if you can get a plan for under $50, you're lucky. I pay about 30 bucks a month.

That's funny.

Here's an interesting test for real.
Show Americans (especially) a blank map of the US
with all the states marked but not labeled.

See how many states you can correctly identify.
I did pretty good but didn't get them all right.
I think I missed about 8 or so.

I'll have to try again now years later and see
how I do.

Oddly, last time I missed Virginia. ;-D

Years ago, on a gardening group, we had someone who would contact
group members saying she was passing their area and wondered if she
could possibly stop in briefly to look round their lovely garden.

Once through the door, she felt too tired and unwell to drive, and
begged a bed just for the night. Then next morning she declined to leave
for several days (her record was a fortnight). That leech suckered many
group members the same way.

Again... I've never read RFC Facebook.
All I know about that group is that many that used to post
here to Usenet have left and moved there.

I always consided them "babies that couldn't handle the
"wild west" aspect of an unmoderated usenet group.
Then I realized that they probably just tired of all the
non-food topics posted here constantly.

Hence, my apology for thinking of them as babies.
That's all.

3-4 years ago, I DID sign up for Facebook and used my real
name and some info. Next step was they sent me an email
to verify that and finish the signup. I decided not to.

For the next year, I constantly got emails from them telling
me how many there have tried to contact me, etc and to finish
my signup. Eventually all the Facebook spamming ended.
